Wei Wuxian remembers how he pulled off Lan Wangji’s forehead ribbon in the past, not realizing that it has an intimate meaning. In the present, the headless dismembered corpse pieces itself back together and tries to attack the Lan Juniors. Lan Wangji arrives in the nick of time with his brother Lan Xichen, and uses musical cultivation to suppress the headless corpse. Wei Wuxian realizes that the corpse is the body of Nie Mingjue, and tells Lan Xichen that the culprit is likely Jin Guangyao. Lan Xichen doesn't believe him, and so they all plan to go to the Jin cultivation conference together to look for clues. After the first night of the conference, Wei Wuxian uses a spell to put his soul in a paper doll to sneak into Jin Guangyao’s home.
