The Xiao Xingchen that Wei Wuxian and the junior met turns out to be Xue Yang in disguise! He holds the juniors hostage, as he asks Wei Wuxian for help repairing a shattered soul. Wei Wuxian tells him that the soul is impossible to repair. Just then, Lan Wangji appears and shields Wei Wuxian, fighting off Xue Yang with his sword, and killing fierce corpses with his guqin. Wei Wuxian manages to escape and leads the juniors towards the ghost girl, A-qing. The girl brings them to a mortuary where the real Xiao Xingchen lies in a coffin. Wei Wuxian uses the spell empathy to live through the girl’s memories. He finds out that she is an orphan pickpocket, who ran into Xiao Xingchen by chance. She became his companion, when one day they found an injured Xue Yang on the side of the road. Xiao Xingchen didn’t recognize Xue Yang and helped heal him.
