Listen "42 ~ Living with Cystic Fibrosis & receiving a combined double lung and kidney transplant at the age of 29!"
Episode Synopsis
I sit down with the incredible Matison, who defied the odds in her battle against Cystic Fibrosis. At just 29 years old, Matison underwent a groundbreaking combined double lung and kidney transplant.
Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease causing thick and sticky mucus in the body, posed severe challenges for Matison, primarily affecting her lungs and gastrointestinal system. Her health took a devastating turn as a teenager when she contracted Mycobacterium Abscessus, an antibiotic-resistant lung infection. This infection led to a rapid decline in her lung function, leading to a double lung transplant as her only option for survival.
Matison's journey to receive the transplant included 6 years of fighting and searching and 11 agonizing rejections due to her persistent infection. During her fight for a transplant, she also developed Chronic Kidney Disease from the toxic antibiotics, leading to renal failure.
On August 20th, 2022, Matison received the life-saving surgery that forever changed her life. Despite the hardships of transplantation, she remains profoundly grateful to her selfless donor and their family.
Tune in as Matison shares her inspiring story of resilience, perseverance, and gratitude, offering hope to those facing similar battles against chronic illness!
