Officials in the Texas secretary of state's office have launched a "full and comprehensive forensic audit" of 2020 general election results in four of the state's largest counties: Dallas, Harris, Tarrant and Collin. The state agency announced the audit late Thursday in a short statement, hours after former President Donald Trump asked Gov. Greg Abbott to add an election audit bill to the agenda for the current special legislative session. The statement said the agency has the authority under existing state laws to conduct election audits and that officials had "already begun the process." It did not say what prompted the audits. State elections officials told lawmakers earlier this year that the 2020 election was "smooth and secure," and data show that voter fraud is rare in the state.
