Dr. Elaine Parker-Gills is a community advocate, civil rights activist, and professor of African American Studies, Education, and Teacher Credential graduate studies programs. Her background includes extensive service in community organizing, beginning in the 1970s in the Los Angeles Black Student Movement for social justice, equity, women’s studies, and empowerment in education. Dr. Parker-Gills discusses the importance of John Dewey’s theory of “Learning by doing” and how it maps onto her practice of identifying strengths in her mentees they may not see in themselves and then encouraging them to seek positions in higher education. Dr. Parker-Gills actively supports community-based organizations focused on youth, education, and civic engagement. She sits on numerous boards of directors and advisory coalitions. She is the W.E.B.
