Listen "006 - The Relationship Between Visibility & Identity"
Episode Synopsis
When showing up becomes anxiety-inducing, it can often feel that when we attempt it we are putting on a mask or a performance of sorts, and that can create an energetic block rather than help us with our visibility because when there’s misalignment there’s resistance. In this episode, we explore the relationship between the deeper layers of our identity and the stories and experiences that can help us show up authentically. Find us at:Victoria - <Website> <Facebook> <Threads> <blog>. Trine - <Facebook>0.40 The connection between identity and visibility.1.00 Visibility as an essential part of entrepreneurship and the challenges around it. 1.35 Personal identity and aligned messaging.2.15 Explaining ‘this thing that we do’ - and how it’s connected to who we are.2.45 A fresh perspective on ourselves and letting go of baggage to embrace the potential of who we want to become.3.10 Making the messaging flow smoothly - and how it’s related to our beliefs about ourselves.3.30 How do we define identity? Is it our ‘mask’, our idea about ourselves, a performance - or is it our ‘true self’?4.10 Can we combine our ‘public appearance’ with our ‘true self’ in order to be authentic? And can this pursuit hurt our visibility project?5.05 Layers of identity and the process of figuring out what we are here to do and how to market ourselves.6.00 Visibility flowing from our truth about ourselves. Looking back at our stories can look like a mosaic and can help us connect some dots to create clarity.7.10 Fragments of identity discovery - like understanding HSP-ness and neurodivergence and how these fragments come together. 8.00 Fitting in and belonging - and how understanding our bits and pieces helps us do this instead of pushing parts of ourselves away.8.50 Embracing and accepting the challenging parts of ourselves - and how that can be both relevant and valuable in creating the story of who we want to become.9.50 Embracing reinvention - a continuum instead of a ‘before and after’. Self-awareness and self-compassion are necessary for self-development.10.30 Victoria about updating her bio - and how seeing all the pieces helps put it together in a meaningful way. And falling in love with an aligned way of who she really is - and how it makes perfect sense of all the layers as they reveal themselves.11.35 Trine about being kind to ourselves, because struggle drags up resistance. 12.10 Integrating ALL of who we are, because denying any part of ourselves create a ‘knot’ in our system we then have to work around or hide. Learning to love all of it IS possible.13.00 Even things we didn’t like or wished away can be turned into the best parts of who we are.13.25 Daring to look at and embrace the parts we might not like about ourselves. Taking responsibility for them makes us able to heal.14.00 Keeping things bottled up takes a lot of energy. Being told we were wrong tends to ‘encapsulate’ things that tend to fester. 14.55 Looking at these traits as ‘right’ under the right circumstances can be a first step to incorporate the traits we might have tried to suppress. 15.35 Valuable to look at the areas where we struggle with visibility and figure out where they originated. How we internalized other people’s perception of us.16.55 Being able to look back at the moments where it felt safer to be visible can shine a light on who we could be if we allow ourselves to define our own identity and release what is not actually ours.17.40 How childhood memories connected to difficult emotions aren’t always really about us.18.45 Becoming something through our business - and that requires visibility.19.15 ‘You are enough’ - true, but there can be something we can learn and get better at.19.45 Victoria’s memory about being a sensitive kid - and being shamed for it. 21.10 Moments like these can be very impactful and influence us for years - they teach us it’s not safe for us to be our true selves. We have to change to be accepted. 22.05 We all have these painful memories, even if they are not always as clearly defined.23.00 We can look at these areas where we are stuck and reframe them to tell a positive story about ourselves. In Victoria’s example, it was her caring, attentive nature that caused the ‘wound’.24.00 Historically, women have had to be ‘invisible’ to stay safe, so it’s hard to break out of, due to constant reinforcement. 25.00 Telling the good stories about ourselves helps us let ourselves be recognized for what we have to offer25.45 Important to identify what we care about being good at - not what others need us to be!26.15 Feedback from others don’t always tell the whole story about who we are. WE can look into it to find the stuff WE want to nurture and cherish.26.45 Keeping up the positive labels others give us can be exhausting, so it’s worth making sure we don’t take on roles just to feel a sense of belonging. 28.00 How the relationships we are in help form our identity. Some of us tend to bend to others’ needs instead of keeping focus on our own, which is something we need to address if we want to be in business for ourselves.28.30 Part of the process is to realize that the only true belonging comes from within - the inner connection.29.00 Being with people who accept us for who we are and support us in being who we want to be is of huge value as well. Belonging versus fitting in.29.50 We have to develop our visibility to create success in our business, but it’s important that we do so from a sense of our true identity. 30.30 Messaging is not about finding words to do the job - it’s about connecting to our hearts and expressing what’s truly essential for us. 31.05 Embodiment is not about making what we say true, but the feeling we get when what pours out of us is an extension of what we care about. 31.30 Knowing who you are so clearly that every word expresses your essence.31.45 Finding your ‘Ikigai’ first - then the rest flows naturally.32.15 We can’t embody things that are ‘externally influenced’ - all that just gets in the way of our true story and our ability to show up authentically.33.00 Find out who we are first - then showing that to the world becomes easier. That’s the work and that’s why it’s so important to find a way of doing the inner work that works for us.34.00 Having a purpose-driven business is intrinsically linked to being able to bring all of us.
