Tom tries to save Cora Fisher, his ex-girlfriend, who appears to be under the spell of evil magic. Later on, it is discovered that the Crooked Man—a malevolent force that subjugates the populace—is the source of the curse. Hellboy, Bobbie, and Tom work together to look into strange happenings in the towns and woodlands. They discover Effie, the evil enchantress, leading a coven of witches that work for the Crooked Man. Hellboy fights to break the curse and save the villagers from the clutches of evil, leading to a succession of confrontations with the witches and their demonic overlords. The main characters are pitted against the evil supernatural forces of the Appalachian wilderness in a last-ditch struggle for their lives and souls.
