Listen "Bulker Kaye E. Barker Grounds Outside Muskegon, Michigan | What's Going on With Shipping?"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - looks at the grounding of MV Kaye E. Barker inbound to Muskegon, Michigan that took place on the evening of April 28, 2022. The ship was in the channel, when it grounded just outside the breakwater from the port, with a load of stones from Port Inland, Michigan. It is not clear if sand had shifted over the winter and why the channel depth was not certified prior to the ship arrival. This story was preceded by an interview with Megan Milliken Biven on the need for more domestic US dredges and the reconstitution of the US public dredge fleet.
