Listen "Gaining Knowledge and Building Relationships Episode 40: Getting Real About Period Poverty with the Ma'i Movement"
Episode Synopsis
Welcome back to "What Up Leeward! Let's Dive Deep", your go-to platform where we address prevailing student life topics and explore initiatives that make student life enriching and comprehensive.
In this episode, we are besides ourselves with excitement, as we are joined by Nikki and Bella from the Ma'i Movement Hawai’i - a groundbreaking endeavor that focuses on making ma'i products accessible for all, and in turn, combating what is known as 'period poverty'.
For our listeners unaware of 'period poverty', it is the hardship many women and those assigned female at birth face, due to a lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand washing facilities, and waste management. The Ma'i Movement Hawai’i is at the forefront of addressing this at the UH system and in our community, setting a framework decolonising, destigmatizing, and decriminalising ma'i.
One of the major victories of the Ma'i Movement is the installation of product dispensers in all women's restrooms across our campuses and the placement of acrylic containers in men's restrooms for our transgender or gender nonconforming classmates. This sends a powerful and inclusive message, combating period poverty and addressing the needs of all students, regardless of their gender identity.
As we dive deep with Nikki-Ann Yee, we'll broach a broad range of topics from ma'i products, aggression towards period poverty, to the essential pillars of gender equality and inclusivity. This conversation is bound to be inspiring, enlightening, and a testament to the power of activism in fostering change in our communities.
If the Ma'i Movement has piqued your interest as much as it has ours, we encourage you to delve deeper or lend a hand.
