Episode Synopsis

Continuing our October “Showbiz in Recovery” theme, is the story of Roy—a recovering addict with 38 years clean whose life is proof that recovery can restore not only sanity, but the soul itself. A rockabilly musician, storyteller, and servant of the fellowship, Roy reminds us that no matter how far down we go, the melody of recovery can still play on within us.Roy picked up a guitar as a child—and a drug habit not long after, at the age of just twelve. By the age of twenty-five, his disease had already taken hold. He pawned his prized Fender Stratocaster for drug money and traded the music of his heart for the silence and isolation brought on by the disease of addiction. He chased a dream that slipped further away with each hit, each lie, each broken promise. What began as fun became a prison of his own making. He had talent, opportunity, and fire—but the disease took it all.His first attempts at recovery were shaky. Still young, clinging to people who used, he tried to stay clean. When that failed, as it always does, he spiraled again. It wasn’t until, through the relentless help of his family, that Roy went to a detox and rehab facility. It was not until he met the first man in his time clean to actually trust him—that the miracle if his transformation into a productive member of society began. That very trust became the foundation of his recovery.Roy found his home in the rooms of Narcotics Anonymous, in the early days of the fellowship in New York. From his early days as a recovering addict, he was carrying the message into hospitals and institutions, learning from his sponsor that service is the cornerstone of recovery. He began to live the spiritual principles, one day at a time—no spotlight, no stage lights—just the light that comes from helping another addict find their way.As the years passed, Roy rebuilt his life through music and service. Now the lead singer of The Buzzards, he’s spent over three decades writing music, touring the world, staying clean in places and situations that once nearly killed him. His commitment to recovery runs as deep as his love for the sound that first gave him hope. Today, he’s an NA archivist, preserving decades of the fellowship’s history—flyers, documents, and memories that tell the story of how we got here. His home is filled with guitars, recovery literature, and the echoes of both pain and promise.Roy’s story isn’t just about staying clean—it’s about finding freedom, purpose, and joy after devastation. It’s about discovering that recovery isn’t the end of the verse—it’s a brand new tune.“Rockabilly music saved my soul,” he says. And through his music, his message, and his unshakable service, Roy’s music continues to save the souls of others—one lyric and one day at a time.
