Goal's Seth Vertelney brings you up to date with the latest American women’s soccer news.The Washington Spirit and Gotham FC both earned big wins on Sunday night, with the Spirit beating Racing Louisville 2-0 and Gotham defeating the Chicago Red Stars 2-1. Gotham and Washington moved up to second and third place in the standings respectively. Ashley Hatch scored a goal for the Spirit, her sixth of the season. She now leads the NWSL in goals. For Gotham FC, who are now unbeaten in seven matches, Midge Purce grabbed the winner. In other NWSL news, the Orlando Pride named Becky Burleigh interim head coach for the remainder of the 2021 season. Burleigh spent 26 years as the head coach at the University of Florida before announcing her retirement in February.Meanwhile in Japan, the U.S. continued to prepare for their Olympic group stage finale against Australia on Tuesday. The U.S. needs a draw to guarantee a second place finish in the group and a place in the quarterfinals.
