Episode Synopsis

I’m Seth Vertelney with Goal, and this is the American women’s soccer news you need to know today. The U.S. national team’s Olympic opener is now just one week away, as longtime rival Sweden awaits on July 21 in Tokyo. The U.S. has been boosted by the news that they and all other teams will be able to choose from 22 players for their matches, rather than 18. In past Olympics, teams have used 18-player rosters with four alternates who could only be moved to the active roster if they replaced another player. But this summer, the IOC has ruled that the four alternates will be available for selection, though teams can still only name 18-player rosters for each match. The U.S. has arrived in Japan but unlike previous Olympics, the team won’t be able to play any closed-door scrimmages against other teams due to coronavirus restrictions. For the next week, the U.S. will be preparing for their opener by facing some of their toughest opposition: each other. If you want more news and views on the U.S. national team's journey in the Olympics you can now get Goal’s new podcast - “All of US: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Show” wherever you listen to podcasts.
