Listen "Coins of great value"
Episode Synopsis
You might want to celebrate with your friends If you ever find a 20p dated 2017. While in a normal year the Royal Mint produces millions of them, in that year not a single 20p was minted for general circulation. Just a few commemorative coins were made.
The reason for this appears to be the introduction of the new 12-sided £1 coin and the phasing out over six months of the old round one. Suddenly the whole nation was searching for round £1 coins to spend while they were still legal tender, and in the process discovering and spending all sorts of other coins they found along the way. For a while the banking system was flooded with extra coins removing the need to mint new ones.
Jesus once told a famous story to illustrate the depth of God’s love for us. In the story a woman had lost a coin that was very precious to her. She turned her house upside-down until she found it, and when she did, she called her friends and neighbours to come and celebrate with her. Jesus concludes the story by saying, ‘In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.’
