Listen "Look up"
Episode Synopsis
After 35 years in ordained ministry, I was given a three-month sabbatical and on day one flew to Scotland to stay by the sea. One sunny afternoon, I took a walk down to the port and set off along the harbour wall without a care in the world. The wall was not fenced in on any side and an unwary walker might easily plunge over the edge. But that wasn’t going to be. Or so I thought.
Suddenly distracted by my phone I stopped looking where I was going. Only a matter of seconds passed but when I looked up, I was just two steps from plunging off the end of the harbour wall. While I might only have lost my phone and my pride, my heart was pounding at the thought of what might have happened.
Perhaps, though, in the moment it was a reminder of what my sabbatical was meant to be. Too often we become so absorbed with the day-to-day that we lose sight of where we are heading. That’s why God gifted us all a sabbath rest once a week. A day to pause and look up to him so that we might avoid ever falling down.
