Listen "Vayakheil 5782"
Episode Synopsis
When you think of a building or architectural landmark that has had an impact upon you, what is the first thing that comes to mind? This was what I immediately began to think about when I was approaching this week’s Torah portion in preparation to lead our Torah study this coming Saturday. This is because this week’s portion spends a decent amount of time presenting a blueprint for the building of the tabernacle. And, as detailed as it is in every component, each of these materials has a reason for being included and, no different from today, the type of material also had a purpose. Some materials were purposely decorative, while others were practical. I have much more to share this Saturday about the architecture that has influenced me and made me think, and I would love to hear more about what has influenced you.In the meantime, check out this super interesting TED talk by David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame, and currently performing his Broadway show American Utopia) where he talks about the influence of architecture on the composition of music throughout history. It is quite enlightening, and definitely right in line with my Tropeful perspective.
