Listen "October 3rd in Elvis History"
Episode Synopsis
It's October third, and on this day in 1945... ten-year-old Elvis Presley stepped onto a public stage for the very first time. At the Mississippi–Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo, Elvis stood on a chair to reach the microphone and sang “Old Shep” without any music behind him. The performance earned him fifth prize: five dollars and some free ride tickets. It was the first public glimpse of a voice that would soon change music forever. And on this day in 1977... *Elvis in Concert* aired on CBS, just seven weeks after his passing. The special featured footage from his June 1977 tour stops in Omaha and Rapid City—some of the final performances ever captured of the King. The broadcast gave grieving fans around the world one last chance to see Elvis on stage.
