Listen "Episode 27: The 10-Minute Ripple: How a Brief Exchange Shook the $33.9 Billion MGM Dynasty"
Episode Synopsis
The recent ransomware attack on MGM Resorts, a gaming giant with a valuation of $33.9 billion, sent shockwaves across the cybersecurity community. Large portions of MGM’s systems were shut down, causing significant disruptions in its hotels and casinos. With many establishments "out of action", staff were left resorting to pen and paper. According to TechCrunch and initial reports by vx-underground on September 13, the culprits were identified as Scattered Spider, an associate of the ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware-as-a-service group. Known for their expertise in social engineering, Scattered Spider masterfully impersonated an MGM employee after a simple LinkedIn search, ultimately tricking the help desk with just a 10-minute conversation.
