Listen "Suicide Awareness for World Mental Health Day with Ciara McCullough"
Episode Synopsis
Today (10th October 2019) is World Mental Health Day and the theme for this year is Suicide Prevention. In order to raise awareness about suicide, I’m joined on this episode by Killaloe based wedding photographer Ciara McCullough who shares her mental health journey. Ciara lost her father to suicide when she was just 1 year old and had three failed suicide attempts in her late teens and early 20s. She sought help after her third failed suicide attempt and discovered through psychotherapy and counselling that she didn’t have to believe every negative thought that she had. She also gained a set of tools and strategies through these sessions that she could resort to during her darker moments. Ciara bravely shares her story in an attempt to encourage others who may be struggling to realise that there is hope, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that help and support is there if you are willing to open up, ask for help and talk. You can find Ciara on Instagram @pushedbeyonddefeat or @tiltedtripodweddings. If you are struggling and need someone to talk to there are many Irish helplines which provide a listening service and confidential, non-judgemental support. These include Samaritans 116 123, Aware 1800 80 48 48 and Pieta House 1800 247 247.
