Bluegrass musician and artisan Winky Hicks died on Dec. 6 at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack, sending shock waves from Clarke County to Nashville. He was 72. James Leonard Hicks, whose nickname was bestowed upon him in childhood by an uncle, had not been sick but apparently suffered a heart attack at his Asbury home. Hicks — who had no formal musical training — picked a mean banjo and could make one, as well as guitars, mandolins and fiddles.
