In the first episode of our season entitled, "The Simpleminded Society," we argue that the question of truth should be elevated above the question of offense; we define simplemindedness; we provide several examples of it in contemporary society; we detail the way of the true philosopher; and we provide practical tips on how to overcome simplemindedness."One important lesson that I have learned, whether through success or failure, is that sometimes the truth, or at least what we subjectively perceive to be the truth, is inherently offensive, and there’s no way around it. You can slave—through blood, sweat, and tears—over how to express the idea in question in the most sensitive way possible; you can express the idea in the most respectful, humble, nuanced, gentile, and amicable manner imaginable—and the idea will still be offensive, at least to some.
