When he was growing up in North Carolina, Howard was an active young man. He played sports at Broughton High School, including football, baseball, and lacrosse. After graduation, he continued to challenge himself by joining the US Army Reserves. He also enrolled at Saint Augustine’s University in 2015 and continued his military training in the ROTC. He had hoped to graduate from college commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and pursue a career as an Army Ranger. He also joined the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He was a leader and was rewarded with a full scholarship in college. His life changed suddenly on March 3, 2018. He joined his brothers on a trip to Columbia, South Carolina for a fraternity event. Just by chance, a Saint Patrick’s Day celebration was happening nearby. Howard went to the event, and then a random altercation that had nothing to do with him erupted. He wasn’t even in the immediate circle where the argument was going on between two men. Suddenly, shots rang out without a target in the sight of the shooter. Howard was struck and woke up in the hospital weeks later paralyzed. Although he was not the target, the bullet did not make a U-turn and found him. Howard shares a powerful story of courage and resilience. He is the author Trauma Behind the Mask, a book of poetry that illustrates what happens when a lethal weapon falls into the wrong hands. “Many of my poems tackle gun violence,” Howard says. He is also the Founder and CEO of Legacy 318, an advocacy organization created to educate the public about gun violence. “With this brand,” Howard continues, “we are taking a leap of faith in order to take a stand against gun violence.”
