Swashbuckling Athlone Town secured their maiden league title with a resounding 2-0 victory over Bohemians on TG4 on Saturday despite Shels doing what was required of them with a 3-0 win over the previous champions Peamount.Elsewhere a gallant Treaty overcame Galway to potentially set up their best finish to a season in some time as Sligo Rovers secured their first win of the season in their penultimate game in a disrupted game on Leeside. Wexford and Shamrock Rovers could not be separated in Ferrycarrig Park finishing 2-2.Despite the glut of action across the league it was off the field events which dominated the coverage of the league this season as some end of season retirements are announced and Rovers defender Savannah McCarthy is pulled from a burning vehicle with serious injuries on Sunday evening.
