Listen "The Truth About "Struggling Students" Every Parent Needs to Hear - with Brandon Glover | GOB 11"
Episode Synopsis
When your child is struggling in school, it can feel like their entire future is on the line. The story we're sold is terrifying: if they don't get the grades now, they'll end up with nothing later — homeless, living under a bridge in a burnt-out Pinto, as I often joke with my clients. In this episode, I want to gently but firmly challenge that fear-based narrative. I'm talking with someone I know very, very well: my son, Brandon Glover. By conventional measures, Brandon is wildly successful at 30. He owns and operates multiple businesses — including Ivy Creek Pools & Patios, a multimillion-dollar outdoor living and pool company in Charlotte, NC, and a full-service car wash in Pittsboro, NC — and he's now building homes and investing in real estate. He's also a published neuroscience researcher, a former pre-med student, and vice president of the American Medical Student Association chapter during his college years. But here's the part most parents need to hear: as a kid and teenager, Brandon did not care about school. I rarely saw a textbook, a neat backpack, or a peaceful homework session. Yet underneath that academic disengagement lived an intense drive, curiosity, and work ethic that just didn't fit the traditional classroom mold. In our conversation, we explore: Why grades and test scores are such a poor measure of a child's potential How passion, curiosity, communication, and work ethic become far more important than straight A's Why some kids "fail" in certain school environments but thrive in others How Brandon learned to work with his busy mind, anxiety, and fear — and eventually turned them into fuel The practical inner tools he used (and still uses) to reshape his self-concept and build a life that feels aligned and self-directed This episode is a clarion call to parents, caregivers, and young people: your worth — and your child's worth — is not defined by a report card. There are so many ways to be intelligent, capable, and successful. My hope is that this conversation softens some of the fear around education, opens up space for curiosity, and offers you a more compassionate, grounded lens for looking at yourself and the kids you love.
