When you were born God breathed into your soul, soul life along with biological life. You were born physically alive but spiritually dead. This is because Adam's original sin was imputed to us at birth. “Therefore, just as through one man [through Adam] sin entered into the world, and death through sin [that’s spiritual death] and then death spread to the entire human race because all have sinned.” (Rom 5:12). Your second birth (being born again) is spiritual and it’s completely volitional. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3). It's a simple act of faith. “He that believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God” (1 John 5:1).
