Where there is life, there is disease.  That's basically the history of planet earth.  It's also the history of humanity.  If you look into the various diseases we lived with, especially long before modern medicine, you'll wonder how our species made it out of the caves.  To be fair, we live in the technological future and we've cured almost everything and we still can't even answer basic questions about the latest contagion, so it seems maybe nothing has gotten better after all.  And speaking of contagion, you can read Contagion and decide for yourself.  Pessimism or optimism - which is right for you?
