Listen "S1E16 - The Book of 1 Samuel - Lesson 16 (Chapter 18: 1-13)"
Episode Synopsis
Introduction: What is the benefit in taking the time to find out who David really was? Is there any spiritual value in getting to know the person of David? I believe that there is. First, David was God’s Choice to rule Israel. That calling in and of itself should draw our interest. Secondly, Jesus was sometimes referred to as the “Son of David”. He did not take the title of son of Abraham, nor Moses nor any other O.T. saint. Lastly, we can not overlook the statement of David being a man after God’s own heart.
Therefore, in studying the person of David, as scripture presents him we can expand our understanding of the person of God. This is the true value of learning the character of David.
The outline for this lesson covering 1 Samuel 18: 1-13
Saul and David’s victory
Jonathan and David’s victory
Saul promotes David
Saul demotes David
Conclusion:
When The History Channel is not discussing aliens and ghosts they have some pretty good programming. Most recently, Lisa and I have enjoyed one of their series; The Food That Built America. We also enjoyed their previous series; The Men That Built America.
I did notice a trend that seemed common to each of these entrepreneurs in both of the series. They each had the ability to see value where others did not. Often at great cost and risk to themselves they endured the time and sacrifice to get to find their success.
The books of 1st & 2nd Samuel are obviously historical narratives. It will be up to us to find the value. We will need to spend the time and effort to seek out the spiritual application without compromising the context of the scripture. Like those early American entrepreneurs, we must find the value where others may have overlooked.
The Settled In Heaven podcast series consists of weekly episodes that are recorded in our Sunday School class at Stuart Heights Baptist Church in Hixson, TN.
