From the fall in the garden of Eden unto the coming of Christ man had never worship God with a pure heart. And the reason he had not was due to the prevailing darkness and power of lust. The dark power of lust controlled the hearts of men which meant that every single thing he engaged in or pursued was inspired by fleshly lust. Spiritual truth had not been introduced into the world before Christ, because even if it had man, as witness by the law, would not have been able to invest himself within it to the satisfaction of God. Even today, nothing has changed. The spirit of Christ is the only place promoting worshipping God with a pure heart, and anyone outside of the spirit thinking themselves capable of during so is terribly deceived.
