Listen "In-depth: what I talk about when I talk about design thesis - Part 2"
Episode Synopsis
Send us a textThe 2nd Part episode starts with listening to the collective voice calling for the design thesis as a crucial year, the beginning part of an architect's journey into their career, to be led by a design practitioner and not the academic. The project could fuel the passion of the budding architect to explore their interest and life-long learning. This episode will explain the 3 fallacies (issues) that academicians do regarding the design thesis course. 1) Making the design thesis like a 'thesis', as arguably there is a difference between 'design problems' as opposed to 'problem statement' (hypothesis). At the end of the day, the complexities of architecture design are not merely technical competencies but much more varied and complex.2) Linking design thesis to social science research (masters dissertation) limits the exploration of architecture which is a combination of arts and sciences and not at all social sciences like real estate, planning, and quantitative surveying. Both have different aims and objectives as learning courses.3) Other disciplines such as medicine and engineering stick to their guns, like medicine would insist on 'clinical practice', so why not architecture vanguards uphold our discipline of 'architecture practice'? Hence the need to have a design thesis studio led by design practitioners and not full-time academics.©️Talk Architecture 2023, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob.
