Listen "GloBird Energy | Are all energy retailers created equal?"
Episode Synopsis
Did you know that in an average Australian household, 32% of energy is used for heating and cooling, 27% for water heating, and 22% for appliances and lighting? (Source: State of the Energy Market 2023). In an industry that is constantly evolving and at a time when the cost of living is on top of everyone’s mind, consumers are looking for ways to keep their energy costs down and reduce their environmental impact. In this episode, Kiarne is joined by GloBird Energy’s Chief Technology Officer, Evan Giosis. The pair share an honest conversation about the role of the energy retailer and what they really can do to support the energy transition. Having never worked in the energy industry before, Evan admits that he didn’t think all that much about it before, but he’s now excited at the prospect of using technology to transform the sector. Tune in for an interesting chat about the state of the industry and get some surprising tips to reduce your home energy bills and consume more solar power - even if you don’t have solar panels. Key discussion points: GloBird is a customer-first energy retailer boasting that ‘red carpet treatment’ is at the heart of everything they do. Technology plays an important role in the energy transition and GloBird is leading the way with innovative products and services to enhance the customer experience along the way. What is the role of the energy retailer? Energy retailers have been accused of differentiating merely by the colour of the bill, so this Aussie scale up is committed to shaking up the industry with innovative technologies. The energy retailer is only one part of a massive ecosystem. The retailer is managing a sophisticated wholesale buying structure to provide assurances to Aussie households; it’s far more complex (and varying) than most would think. The Free Lunch Product offers households free energy in the middle of the day (when the sun shines the most!). The Virtual PowerPlant is inevitable, but operating and managing that is a huge challenge that GloBird is taking steps to address. What exactly is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and what exactly is holding us back? GloBird invests in BioEnergy, which is where biomass (landfill) is decomposed and turned into methane as an energy source. This is just one of the ways that GloBird is contributing to more new and greener energy sources. Carbon offsets and Green Power are two different schemes that communities can take part in to vote for a cleaner energy grid with their wallet.
