In the book of Jonah, God commands Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh, a place known for its wickedness, and warn the people to repent or face destruction. Jonah, however, disobeys and tries to flee in the opposite direction by boarding a ship. During his escape, a violent storm arises, and Jonah, realizing he is the cause, tells the sailors to throw him overboard. A great fish (often depicted as a whale) swallows Jonah, and he spends three days and nights in its belly. During this time, Jonah prays to God, expressing repentance.
