Listen "Go Ahead—Try Not to Think for 10 Minutes (A Mindfulness Experiment)"
Episode Synopsis
Go ahead—try not to think a single thought for the next ten minutes. Let me know how far you get. This episode is different. Instead of me giving you a word salad about reality, I'm inviting you to experience yourself for yourself through a guided mindfulness experiment. Sit down in a dignified posture—upright but not uptight—and watch your breath. Don't control it, don't slow it down, just watch. Notice thoughts arise. Don't judge them. Just see if you can catch the thought before it appears, during it, or after. Notice when you notice. Here's what you'll discover: your thoughts are thinking themselves. You are not doing your thoughts. All of them—good, bad, neutral—are doing themselves. You'll feel (without words) that your thoughts ARE you, that you're the one thinking them. But as you watch, you'll realize: the real you is not the content of thought. You are that which is watching thoughts arise. This is self-realization—realizing what your self actually is. And your self is not a thing, not a thought, not a body. You are the sky; thoughts are clouds passing through. Kalu Rinpoche: "We live in illusion. There is a reality, we are that reality. When you understand this, you'll see you are nothing. And being nothing, you are everything."Featuring Jesus on "the words I speak are not mine" and "deny thyself," Meister Eckhart's "the eye through which I see God is the same eye God sees me," the Buddha's first noble truth (there is suffering) reframed as "suffering is pain times resistance," Aramaic salotha (prayer as presenting what is, not asking for things), "stay awake" as the core emphasis of all spiritual traditions, love and awareness as two sides of the same coin (cooking with love = cooking with attention), and Lao Tzu on "can you coax your mind from its wandering?"I share my 3am rent crisis: waking drenched in sweat, unable to pay $2,400 rent, not knowing where money would come from. I sat on a meditation cushion at 3am and held the feeling in my chest—no words, no fixing, just being with the terror. I cried for 40 minutes. Later that day, my sister contacted our church and they gave me $1,000. That's prayer on the deepest level—not crafting petitions, but sitting with what is.We discuss: "clear" means both transparent (uncluttered mind) and in-focus (fully present), why your kids crave your attention (being seen IS love), "get out of your mind and come to your senses," Dante's Inferno (the only way out of hell is straight through), compassion literally means "suffering together," and "you can't stop the waves but you can learn to surf."If you've never meditated, don't know where to start, or think you "can't do it"—this one's for you. Try the experiment.
