The religious leaders had transformed God's gift of Sabbath into a burden of rigid rules, missing its true purpose entirely. Jesus declared that the Sabbath was made for humanity's benefit, not as another master to serve. He positioned himself as Lord of the Sabbath, replacing rule-following with relationship.
