Pete Johnson’s band…just payin’ some union dues.
You’re listening to 627 Stomp by Johnson in 1940. The title refers to the Kansas City Musicians Union, Local 627. Founded in 1917, it was known as the “Colored Musicians Union”. Kansas City was, of course, one of the early strongholds of Jazz. And as it grew, so did the 627. It represented many jazz icons, like Bennie Moten, Count Basie and Charlie Parker. Pete Johnson paid tribute to the union in 1940. Here he is with 627 Stomp.
