Listen "The Last Camp"
Episode Synopsis
Between 1987 and 1999, Anousone and her family were among thousands of Lao refugees navigating life in Northern Thailand’s unstable camp system. Their story begins in a small "outlet" camp that was on the verge of closure. With nowhere to go, they hoped to transfer to the larger Napho refugee camp—but without proper documentation or official help, the path was filled with uncertainty and risk.As the smaller camp shut down, the urgency grew. Too many families were left behind, and the camp couldn't reopen without the involvement of the United Nations. That’s when a UN worker named Mr. James stepped in. He became a lifeline for Anousone’s family, tirelessly working to help them locate her missing mother. After searching multiple camps with no success, a breakthrough came when he met someone who recognized her mother and helped reunite them. But even after this emotional reunion, it became clear they could no longer stay in Thailand. Mr. James reached out to local authorities, including the police and town mayor, to advocate for the family’s transfer to Napho. It wasn’t a straightforward process. Anousone had to take initiative—organizing others, finding people who were willing to help, and even gathering money to pay bribes that would convince local police to reopen the outlet camp.Through persistence and community effort, they were able to collect the funds and briefly reopen the camp, allowing 200–300 families to shelter there temporarily. A few months later, Anousone and her family were finally allowed into Napho—the last refugee camp they would call home. That camp eventually closed in 1992, after they had safely left Thailand. This episode is a raw, personal account of displacement, family separation, survival, and resilience. It offers a rare, human look into the refugee experience—how families survive when systems fail, and how hope and persistence can lead the way to freedom.
