Listen "Billieve: Jets Preview With MacGregor Wells Gang Green Nation"
Episode Synopsis
The Buffalo Bills (3-2) will look to avoid their first three-game losing streak since 2018 (Josh Allen's rookie season) when they travel to MetLife Stadium to face the New York Jets (2-3) on Monday Night Football in a matchup of teams looking to snap two-game losing streaks. To get you ready for the game, on this week’s episode of the Billieve podcast, we're joined by MacGregor Wells, who covers the Jets for the SB Nation website, Gang Green Nation.
The big news out of Jets camp this week was the firing of head coach Robert Saleh after he compiled a 20-36 record over three-plus seasons leading the team. We start our conversation by discussing the firing of Saleh, whether it was justified, and whether getting rid of a defensive-minded guy like Saleh will be enough to get the Jets back on track, considering it was the offense, not the defense, that has let the team down so far this year.
Wells discusses the state of the Jets, including what's wrong with QB Aaron Rodgers, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer who has not looked good through the first five games of the season. Rodgers has frequently failed to find the open receiver and the offense, which has star power in RB Breece Hall and WRs Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams. Wells says one of the biggest reasons the Jets offense has stalled so far: Rodgers hasn't had time to throw the ball behind an offensive line that is struggling with its pass protection, and Hall appears to have lost his explosiveness following a dynamic 2023 season. The o-line has also allowed ample pressure on Rodgers, who has been sacked eight times and hit 25 times over his last two games.
We also explore how the Jets' run defense has been susceptible to allowing opposing running backs to run wild, which should be a good omen for whoever starts for Buffalo in the backfield, whether it's James Cook, former Jet Ty Johnson or rookie Ray Davis. We discuss how the Jets' pass rush basically consists of Will McDonald (six sacks) while the rest of the defensive line has failed to generate pressure unless the team sends extra blitzers.
Wells also says that while CB Sauce Gardner is indeed among the best cover corners in the league, the Jets actually boast one of the best group of CBs in all of football, and that it will be a challenge for Buffalo’s WRs to create separation against this group. On the plus side, Wells says one of the defense’s weaknesses is allowing tight ends and running backs to have big days catching passes, an area the Bills could look to exploit on Monday night, especially if LB C.J. Mosley remains out with a toe injury. Look for Dalton Kincaid to finally have that breakout game.
We close by offering up score predictions as the Bills look to get back in the win column against a Jets squad that has traditionally played the Bills tough at MetLife Stadium.
