You've heard the whispers around the virtual water cooler. Quiet quitting. It’s the phenomenon sweeping the modern workplace. 🤫Doing just enough. Clocking in, clocking out. No more, no less. The bare minimum. We all know what it means. But what we don't often talk about is how it feels to work alongside someone who is quiet quitting. How do we perceive them? And more importantly, how do we treat them?Today, we're dissecting a brilliant new paper published on August 7, 2025, in the highly prestigious Human Resource Management, an FT50-listed journal. The paper is titled "Exploring Coworker Perceptions of and Reactions to Quiet Quitting." The research team found that when employees see a coworker quiet quitting, they pull back their support. They get a little colder. A little meaner. But here's the kicker, the part that will really make you think. The study revealed that the people most likely to be uncivil towards a quiet quitter... are the ones who are quiet quitting themselves. 🤯So, that leaves us with one burning question: when we see a reflection of our own disengagement in someone else, why does our first reaction turn out to be hostility instead of empathy?A massive thank you to the authors, Andrew A. Bennett, Rhett T. Epler, Veronica L. Thomas, and Daroon Jalil, and to the publisher, Wiley Periodicals LLC, for this thought-provoking work.Stay tuned as we unravel it all.
