Professor Stanley Metcalfe (1946-2025) was more than a researcher—he was a bridge between disciplines, a mind that saw connections where others saw divides. His contributions to evolutionary theory, Schumpeterian dynamics, and innovation systems reshaped the way we think about competition, selection, and technological change.Franco Malerba, in his tribute published in Economics of Innovation and New Technology, captured the breadth of Metcalfe’s impact. His approach was both broad and precise, blending theory with empirical rigor, embracing micro and macro perspectives, and drawing insights from economics, sociology, business studies, and political science. His work on innovation systems, institutions, and entrepreneurship continues to guide researchers and policymakers navigating the complexities of economic evolution.But beyond his scholarship, Stan Metcalfe was a mentor, a colleague, a source of wisdom and encouragement.
