The four gospels were written to document eye witness accounts of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes His closest followers, the Apostles. Acts 2 says "And they [the church] devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." Since the birth of the church in Acts chapter 2 there was a constant assault from without and subversion from within trying to stop the spread of the gospel by distorting the simple teachings of the Apostles. The devil raised up an army of false teachers to confuse and draw away these disciples from the simple teachings they had received. The Epistles were written to remind these disciples of the teachings of the Apostles and to contend with those spreading error within the Church. But it was up to each disciple to join the Apostles in contending for the gospel against these forces of darkness which wanted to destroy their faith. This "Contending" series will help us understand how to "contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints". (Jude 1:3)
