This recording is intended to be the first of a series of podcast episodes focusing on X-Men: The Animated Series. Instead of framing things on key episodes or writers integral to the series, this particular facet of Reel Deep Dive will instead take a character from the program and break things down from their perspective. Since Jubilee served as the audience POV figure for much of X-Men: The Animated Series, Ryan is starting things off with her. We'll do episodes focusing on Storm, Rogue, Wolverine, Beast, and other fan favorites if this one gets enough clicks to justify such a thing.

A young, plucky, and frequently-overwhelmed teenage girl with the ability to shoot fireworks out of her hands, Jubilee has an interesting position in X-Men fandom. While she's widely derided as being annoying and useless to the team, others embrace Jubilee as a relatable figure who largely served as their introduction to the Marvel Universe as a whole. Jubilee is also one of the few Asian-American cartoon characters of her era, which lends wider significance to her presence on Saturday mornings.

Ryan is joined by Sylvan and Cheryl for a thorough dialogue about four Jubilee-centric episodes of X-Men: The Animated Series. Discussion topics include the history of Asian-American depictions in Western media, the wider context of characters like Morph and Longshot, how the X-Men are interpreted by those with conservative viewpoints, the pitfall of respectability politics, and why the X-Men (and superheroes in general) feel the need to have a child engage in highly dangerous fights against evil.
