The fifth commandment is unique in a number of ways. It marks the transition from the first four commandments deal directly with our relationship with God and the final six deal directly with our relationship with neighbor, or people. Parents are in a unique position as representatives of both God and neighbor to their children. Father and mother are representatives of God to their kids, and if a child cannot show honor to their parents, then they cannot show honor to God. Through commandment 5 God establishes and reinforces the relationship priority, covenant head and ideal family structure. Your relationship with your parents and your kids is much more about your relationship with God than it is with anyone else.
