Last Sunday, November 18 our senior pastor at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, continued in our Matthew sermon series and centered this week on Matthew 5:20-48. He pointed out how easy it is to wrongly define “righteousness.” We looked in these verses at six teachings Jesus used to illustrate righteousness and perfection, drawing a contrast between perceived and true righteousness.

At its core, true righteousness is not based on our physical acts but instead is based on the condition of our heart. It is easy for us to relegate righteousness to rules and checklists that we tick off a list, but authentic righteousness is much more because it conforms to God’s nature, His will, and His coming kingdom. God is commanding a wholeness and a completeness—our “insides” must match up with our “outsides.”
