Listen "The Joke’s on Me: Humor in Recovery"
Episode Synopsis
In early sobriety, laughing at my humiliating past felt impossible. But with time, healing, and liberation from that version of me, humor in recovery has been a sign of growth. Laughter can be a tool in healing, although joking about my past with non-alcoholics can get awkward. Its ok to acknowledge our past with humor without glorifying it. There is a line I don’t cross, however; I never joke about needing a drink to handle life. There’s also a fragile boundary between self-deprecating humor and self-compassion with self-forgiveness.Humor can be encouraging in the recovery community, rather than always focusing on the pain. Sharing laughter connects us in recovery. There’s even a vestibular humor chat at the VEDA conference this week. And while I’m not quite there yet, I know from my experience in sobriety that if I keep showing up for myself, practicing gratitude, willingness, and acceptance, I just might get there.
