Listen "Outsmarting the Octopus: The Tentacles of Addiction"
Episode Synopsis
It struck me this morning that alcoholism is like an octopus. Its tentacles reached into every corner of my life: my health, my emotions, my relationships, my self-worth, and my career. The disease was strangling me. And like a octopus, it’s smart. It could camouflage itself in denial, shame, secrecy, and ego so convincingly that I didn’t know I was very sick. Every time I thought I had it cornered, it would slip through as character defects, like perfectionism, people-pleasing, anger, and fear. The answer was surrendering rather than fighting harder. I heard a quote today that Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” So, I had to change my mindset. The steps, fellowship, faith, honesty, willingness, and humility are what loosened the grip. The parts of me that the disease tried to choke are now the very things that bring me peace and purpose. I can outsmart the octopus. By letting go of my character defects, he let’s go of me.Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and YouTube.
