Listen "Diann Cameron Kelly, Ph.D., LMSW: Civic Engagement for Children | Raising Parents #15"
Episode Synopsis
Civic engagement is very important for kids because it helps them become responsible and active citizens who care about others. Encouraging children to engage in civic activities from a young age not only instills important values such as empathy and responsibility, but also helps build a sense of belonging and connection to their community.
In this episode of Raising Parents, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Diann Cameron Kelly, Ph.D., LMSW from Adelphi University. Currently, Dr. Kelly serves as Associate Provost for Student Success and Professor and former Interim Dean at Adelphi University, also an American Council on Education Fellow at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA being mentored by President Tracy Fitzsimmons. She authored many articles on civic engagement and service learning and is the editor and author of an upcoming book entitled "Volunteering".
Dr. Kelly emphasizes the importance of civic engagement in transforming communities and empowering individuals, and how volunteering boosts self-esteem and leads to career opportunities. They also highlight the need for parents to communicate their expectations and involve their children in community service to instill the importance of civic engagement in them. Dr. Kelly also suggests that parents need to allow children to determine their own interests and guide them in developing their civic engagement.
