Peter Kallang, Chairman of Save Rivers Network
*Forests don't need to be destroyed, but they can still provide great benefits*
A briefing was held regarding UBFA - UPPER BARAM FOREST AREA held on Wednesday.
According to Peter Kallang, the project is nearing implementation stage. It will involve an area of 283,500 hectares, covering 32 villages in forest areas. This is the only project in Sarawak that involves forest conservation with the participation of three countries and several local and international NGOs.
Malaysia, Korea, and Japan have expressed their commitment to contribute in terms of expertise, research, and finance. Meanwhile, several local and international NGOs will also do the same.
The UBFA project will go through several phases such as reforestation, road/bridge/infrastructure construction, telecommunications, and water resources. Several committees have been formed to ensure that each plan runs smoothly. Although there are still logging concession areas within the UBFA area, UBFA management will ensure that every logging activity adheres to the concept of environmental sustainability.
So far, logging has destroyed the environment and left forest destruction and river pollution to indigenous people. However, with the new concept of UBFA, logging may be replaced with better forest benefits such as "carbon traps". Simply put, forests don't need to be destroyed, but the benefits of the forest should be returned to the indigenous people. Peter believes that with the sincerity shown by the communities involved, the project is likely to succeed.
