That this world is a place of misery and there is no science, there is no technology, there is no philosophy, there is nothing that can change that. And to try to find lasting pleasure in a place of misery is like trying to keep dry when you are drowning in the ocean. It is simply not possible. There is no chance. Pleasure in this world, Srila Prabhupäda used to say, is really just a temporary relief from the anxieties but they come back again and again and again, and we can make all our endeavors and all our arrangements, but nothing works. We can conquer all directions, become great kings, but the same basic sufferings will be upon you if you are just a beggar in the street. There is really not much difference. There is slight difference in form, but in an essence, the same miseries are for everybody. But Krishna consciousness is the ways and the means by which we can understand that there is something beyond this material nature, and it is accessible to everyone by the grace of God.
