Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician and philanthropist who served as the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and he was also the first democratically elected President after the end of apartheid. Before becoming President, Mandela had spent 27 years in prison for his activism against apartheid. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in South Africa, and his legacy continues to inspire generations around the world.
