The Eiffel Tower was built as the centerpiece of a giant fair or exposition held on Paris, France in 1889. The purpose of the exposition was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The tower was completed in just 17 months and named after the man who built it, Gustave Eiffel.
Eiffel Tower had a height of 984 feet or 300 meters. But radio and television transmitter have increased that to 1,053 feet or 321 meters.
When it was built in 1889 , it was widely criticized. Many people thought it is unsafe and ugly. Due to be demolished in 1909, it was saved because of its value as an antenna for radio transmission.
It was the tallest building until 1930.
