Episode Synopsis
The Colosseum in Rome, Italy, was built nearly 2,000 years ago. The ancient Romans came here to be entertained. They watched hand-to-hand fighting between specially trained men, called the gladiators and contest between men and wild animals.
The ceremony that marked the Colosseum's opening in 80 AD included 100 days of games. Many men and animals lost their lives.
The Colosseum, the largest and most important amphitheatre of Rome, was officially dedicated by the emperor Titus. However, it was the emperor Domitian who completed the structure two years later, in 82 AD., by adding the top storey.
