Last night I had a chance to go over writings of mine from my 30s and 40s. They were angry…and many verged on homophobia. Why was I so mad? And why did so many places want my show and column when I was? Anger today is what wins elections, but anger is ugly, and harmful. And fills me with regret.
Nickel Boys, a new film, shows yet again the horrors of being Black in America in our recent past. Why aren’t all Blacks more angry? And why do Whites tell them they shouldn’t be…they SHOULD be angry, for a long, long time…but is it productive?
As the year ends maybe it’s time to let the anger go America. It doesn’t serve us well.
